7th Wave Joining Instructions

We are looking forward to getting you out on the water.

Our shop is located on Strand Road, Port Erin, IM9 6HF. Please meet us at the shop at the start of your course or session. Our Instructing team will meet you and get you set up with personal kit required for your session.

If you need to contact us prior to the course please call the shop on 01624 836366 or Jen on 07624 450801.

We want everyone to enjoy the water as much as we do.  We respect our environment, our surroundings, other people and our kit.  We do our best to avoid single use plastics, we pick up litter from the beach and the sea.  Our standards of safety and tuition are high, we expect our students and staff to help us to maintain this.

Powerboaters…

Please meet at our shop at 10am on the first morning of your course.  Powerboat Level 2 courses run from 10am to 5pm both days.

You shouldn’t get too wet, but you’ll need warm clothes, a pair of wellies and waterproof jacket and trousers if you have some (if not, we do have waterproofs here).   We will provide lifejackets.

Most of the course will take place afloat aboard our 5m RIB, in Port Erin Bay.  We do not provide lunch, but we will come ashore at lunchtimes.

The RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate requires a photograph of yourself. Please bring a passport sized photograph when you join the course. Without a photo we are unable to issue your RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate.

Sailors…

All RYA or full day courses start at 10am and finish at 5pm.

Under 8s sessions start at 2pm.

Taster Sessions start at the time agreed when you made the booking.

You will need to bring / wear swimwear to go under a wetsuit, rash vest, wetsuit boots or old pair of trainers, a towel and change of clothes.  We will provide wetsuits and buoyancy aids.

Youth Sailing Weeks – please note…

Youth Sailing Weeks start at 10am, doors open at 9.50am.

On the first day of a Youth Sailing Week we will give sailors a wetsuit, which is theirs to keep for the duration of the course.  It will need to be rinsed in fresh water and hung up, inside out, to dry overnight. We get on the water quicker if everyone arrives wearing the wetsuit and kit every morning, but please remember to bring a full change of clothes too.  In the event of bad weather we will try to run outdoor activities so please pack a coat.  We will ensure all sailors are wearing suncream before going on the water.  Please advise us of any allergies in writing before the course.

Can we please remind returning sailors to bring their logbooks with them on the Monday so that we can easily pick up where they left off.

We would prefer that sailors did not bring mobile phones.  The nature of the environment at a sailing school means there is so much opportunity to come into contact with water or sand, or to get damaged by mistake.  We do not accept any responsibility for any damage or loss to phones that occurs here, and to be honest would rather just avoid that scenario happening at all.  Phones are not permitted at lunch times or during teaching sessions.  If sailors need to contact you for any reason the landline at the shop is always available for them to use to call you.  You can contact us at any time on 836366 or 450801

Healthy people, healthy planet

We are conscious that food and drink gives our sailors the fuel they need to get through the day.  We encourage sailors to drink juices, water and low sugar drinks rather than cans of pop, to bring a wholesome lunch and to avoid eating too many sweets during the day.  Energy drinks which are high caffeine such as Monster Energy, Red Bull etc are not permitted at lunch times.

Packaging from packed lunches generates the most rubbish at 7th Wave.  We are trying to reduce the amount of single use plastics and packaging used here.  We ask for your help with this.

We estimated if everyone on a Youth Sailing Week brought a plastic bottle every day, the count would be 1,500 during each school holidays, please help us to keep this count at zero.

What if the weather is bad?

Youth Sailing Weeks will run every day, we have a shorebased programme for juniors on windy days. Powerboat, dinghy courses and Taster Sessions may have to be rescheduled in the event of strong winds. We will endeavour to run all courses as planned, provided the conditions allow for a safe and enjoyable course. If you are in any doubt about the forecast please feel free to call us beforehand.

If you have any questions about your course please contact us; either email
jen@7thwave-iom.com or call us on 836366.

Kayak and paddleboard hire

Please arrive 10 minutes prior to your session start time. Hire is by the hour and the briefing for each session takes place on the hour.

We provide buoyancy aids. Wetsuits are not included but can be hired at £6 per wetsuit. We are only a small outfit and as such we do not have enough space to offer changing facilities for kayak and SUP hirers.

If you are lucky enough to get up and close with sharks, dolphins or seals, do not disturb the creatures, heave-to and switch off engines if safe to do so.
Keep still, keep quiet and enjoy!
