Ben finishes 3rd at RS Tera Nationals

The Nationals saw light winds for the first two days of racing followed by some breeze for the final day event held at Derwent Water, near Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Equiom Manx Youth Sailing Squad members Ben Batchelor, Patrick Cope, Alec Cope and Tim Chan sailed in the Sport fleet which had 55 entrants. Erin Murphy and Matthew Perry competed in the 36 boat Pro fleet.

Sport Aid Foundation recipient Ben Batchelor sailed well to finish in the top ten in every race, with 3rd in Race 5, 2nd in Race 7 and the long sought after win in the final race of the series. Overall Ben finished on the podium in 3rd place.

Patrick worked his way up the fleet from 17th overall after the first day to a very creditable 12th overall. Patrick did well to sail consistently inside the top 20 and scored his best result, 5th in the final race.

Patrick’s younger brother Alec had a mixed bag of results from a 40th to 18th and 15th, but the youngster showing great potential and will now be looking to work toward achieving consistent results in the top 20 for next season.

Tim Chan was competing at his first every competition outside of the Isle of Man, having been invited to join the Equiom Manx Youth Sailing Squad at the start of this season. The first regatta is always a tough one and such a learning curve. Tim started with results in the 50s in the first couple of races but with each race his score improved evening finishing 34th in the penultimate race. Overall his finished in 49th place, a good effort from the newcomer.

With the Pro fleet increasing in size with each Championship the competition is getting tougher, lanes of clear air are hard to find and huge gains or losses can be made at marks. Erin Murphy was top Manx boat finishing in 23rd place. Matthew Perry was next in 29th place, both youngsters struggling to find their form in the light and shifty conditions. We’ve had such a breezy summer here I don’t think the Squad have trained in less than 12 knots of breeze all season. This pair have been on top form in training this summer and were flying in the wind and waves here a couple of weeks ago.

A couple of other Manx boats also travelled to the Nationals, Alasdair Kelly was 55th in the Sport fleet and Will Henthorn 36th in the Pro fleet. For Will this was his first ever major championship, he will have benefited from the experience and no doubt will have learned heaps. Alasdair has done a few events in the Fevas with older brother, a former RS Tera World Champion, James Kelly, but I believe this is the fisrt time Ali has taken the helm for a regatta. A huge well done to both Will and Ali for getting out there and taking part, the only way is up from here!

The Squad would like to thank sponsors Equiom for their continuing support. The team would also like to thank the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for their assistance.

RS Tera Nationals standings after day 2

Ben Batchelor is currently lying in 4th place in the Sport fleet at the RS Tera Nationals. Patrick Cope is 15th, Alec Cope 34th, Tim Chan 50th and Alistair Kelly 53rd of 55 boats. In the 36 boat Pro fleet Erin Murphy is 23rd, Matt Perry 31st, Nathan Pickles 35th and Will Henthorn 36th. From what I gather the winds have been light and shifty, quite the opposite of our last training week where the wind didn’t drop below 16 knots! There is one more day of racing today – hopefully Ben will have a good day and get a podium place.

RS Tera Nationals start tomorrow

The RS Tera Nationals start tomorrow at Derwent Water, Yorkshire, seven Manx boats and one honorary Manxie have travelled to the event.

Equiom Manx Youth Sailing Squad members Ben Batchelor, Erin Murphy, Alec Cope, Patrick Cope, Matt Perry and Tim Chan are joined by Will Henthorn and Nathan Pickles.

We have adopted Yorkshire lad Nathan as one of our since he learned to sail here at 7th Wave. Will and Nathan joined us for a few days training here last week too. We wish everyone the very best for the weekend

Manx interests at RS200 Nationals

Our own Emily Batchelor has been away with her dad in Hayling Island sailing in the RS200 National Championships. They managed a credible 7th in Bronze Fleet and 71st Overall out of 118 boats.

Former World champions James Kelly together with Anna Harding and Greg Kelly sailing with Will Taylor (UK) were also flying the Manx flag.

Breezy week so far

Today seems to be the start of the northwesterly season!  Weather-wise this week has been a wee bit tricky.  We’ve got a group starting RYA Stage 1, a couple of folk doing Stage 2, a bigger group for Stage 3, James Holmes completing Stage 4 and a couple of lads on the advanced levels.  On top of all of that we’ve also got the Equiom Manx Youth Sailing Squad here training in preparation for the RS Tera National Championships later this month.

We managed to get on the water on Monday, with a sailing, kayaking and bodyboarding Breezy Beach Party and a match racing session for the Equiom Manx Youth Sailing Squad.  Yesterday all groups got afloat in the shelter of the harbour, except for the Squad who had a blast out in the bay working on heavy airs sailing.

Today – welcome to Port Erin in a north-westerly!  Not sure how today will pan out yet…

Last two places for next week…

We have 2 places available on our Youth Sailing Week next week. If anyone has any youngsters (16 & under) that would like to learn to sail please get in touch. We are running Stage 1, Stage 3 & 4 and Advanced levels, so there is something for everyone….

Race training this weekend

Race training for juniors – this Saturday. We are offering a full day of coaching with a mini-regatta in the afternoon. It will be a great warm-up for anyone going to the Tera nationals and anyone who wants to get a bit of informal racing experience. Drop us a line if you’d like to join us.

Super day for sailing

The sun is shining and we have a lovely breeze here for sailing today.

So our Stage 1s, 3s, 4s, and Advanced courses are all off out on the water – yeay!

No wind today

All is calm in Port Erin this morning, no wind at least the drizzle has gone now.  We are off out to sea for some kayaking, paddling, rowing and possibly a game of Stations later!

Manxies doing well at the RS Feva Worlds

Great news from the RS Feva Worlds where three Manx boats are competing. Former Manx Youth Sailing Squad member and RS Tera World Champion Greg Kelly is lying in 11th place overall, scoring a 2 and 3 in racing yesterday. Ben Batchelor and Erin Murphy are 43rd in the Gold fleet and Ffinlo Wright with crew Rob Harding are 10th in the Silver fleet, 77th overall. Not a bad effort by the Manxies in a fleet of 184 boats!
