It has been a busy summer this season with more young sailors joining our Youth Sailing Weeks and more adults taking the Dinghy Level 1 course than ever before. Our new Youth Powerboat Handling course also proved very popular and we ran a good number of RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses for the grown ups.
Looking ahead to the next few months, Saturday Club sailing sessions for juniors will continue until the end of October, then we have a full shorebased programme planned to take us through into the new year….
Youth Navigation Courses at Half-Term
During October half term we will be running a new two-day basic navigation course for youngsters aged between 11 and 16. This promises to be an interesting course which will introduce concepts including compass work and direction finding, latitude and longitude, basic chartwork, chart symbols, buoyage, position fixing and much more. As usual we will ensure that this course is pitched at an appropriate level for younger sailors. Theory elements for Stage 4 and some of the more advanced courses can be signed off after successful completion of the course. The course will run from 10am until 5pm each day, the course fee is £120 inclusive of VAT.
VHF Short Range Certificate
Courses for adults start in November with VHF courses on 5th November (full already) and 3rd December. The VHF course provides you with the knowledge, confidence and necessary legal documentation required to operate a marine band VHF/DSC radio. There is a short assessment at the end of the day. The course runs from 9am until 5pm, the fee is £99 inclusive of VAT. There is an additional fee of £30 payable to the RYA for issue of the licence.
RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship
On 12th & 13th November we are running the RYA Essential Navigation and Seamanship course from 9.30am until 5.00pm each day. This is a great course for those who use small boats for coastal journeys. You will become familiar with basic chartwork, position fixing, compass use, interpreting tidal and weather information, some seamanship skills, GPS use and more! No previous boating experience is required. The course fee is £169 which includes all course notes, training charts, training chartplotter software and VAT.
RYA Dayskipper Theory
Dayskipper Theory starts on Saturday 19th November and runs on Saturdays (all day) and Thursday evenings until 10th December. This course is a comprehensive guide to essential aspects of navigation, chartwork, pilotage and seamanship. For details of the full course content please contact me. The course fee is £289 per person which includes all course materials and VAT.
RYA Yachtmaster Theory
In the new year we will be running the Yachtmaster Theory course over six Saturdays from 14th January to 18th February. This advanced course equips skippers with the knowledge required to make offshore and overnight passages and takes your theory knowledge to the standard required for the RYA Coastal Skipper and RYA Yachtmaster Offshore practical exams. Prior knowledge to RYA Dayskipper Theory standard is an essential pre-requisite for this course. The course fee is £289 which includes all course materials and VAT.
