masks and snorkels

After a few years of trying to source decent masks and snorkels we have just received a delivery of them from Gul. Kids mask and snorkel sets are £10 and adult sets are £20.

I wish they had arrived before last weekend, I don’t think I’ve ever seen the sea so clear as it was on Saturday morning.

Ffinlo and Matt at results from IAPS Regatta today

Manx Youth Sailing Squad members Ffinlo Wright and Matthew Petts represented the Buchan School today at the first IAPS Regatta in Weymouth.

This is a Pico regatta with entrants coming from schools around the British Isles. There were 15 entries in the Under 11 Class. Ffinlo and Matt enjoyed some good racing in excellent conditions at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. They sailed consistently at the front of the fleet and over the five races finished: 3rd, 4th, 6th, 3rd and 4th.

In the overall results the boys, with Ffinlo and the helm and Matt crewing, finished 4th place, only one point short of the top three.

Ffinlo said “it was great, the wind got better and better thoughout the day, we were on form and got good starts, but the competition was very tough.”

Ffinlo is off to Dover next for GBR RS Tera Squad training this weekend and Matthew is heading home, we look forward to seeing him for his first Manx Youth Sailing Squad training session next weekend.

IAPS Regatta

Ffinlo and Matt are lying equal third in a fleet of 15 boats. Two races have been completed and further three races follow this afternoon.

7th Wave sailors compete a IAPS Regatta in Weymouth

Best of luck to 7th Wave sailors Matthew Petts and Ffinlo Wright who are competing at the IAPS Regatta in Weymouth today.

From random

It is a schools regatta so the boys are representing Buchan School. This competition is in Pico’s, so the IOMYC kindly lent us a Pico for a a fortnight at Easter which allowed Ffi and Matt to spend two weeks training in the boat prior to the regatta.

Busy weekend ahead

Saturday…….we’ve an RYA Powerboat Level 1 course all day and Saturday Club sailing sessions for juniors in the morning and afternoon.

Sunday is day one of this season’s first RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 1 course for adults. We will be using our new Topper Topaz dinghies 🙂

Just hoping for some good weather now! Forecast at the moment; mainly fair with NE winds….

RS Tera Open Meeting report and results

The Tera Sport fleet had some incredibly close racing; Ffinlo Wright won Race 1, Amie Shute won Race 2 and Greg Kelly won Race 3. Ffinlo was in the lead overnight with five points, Greg and Amie were equal second with seven points each.

Three boats raced with the Tera Pro rig, Hannah Howitt, Izzy Sharpe and James Kelly each scored one win during the first day of racing. Hannah was leading overnight with five points, James second with six points and Izzy third with seven points.

The forecast was for a bit more wind on the Sunday, however by the start of race one the SW wind had dropped significantly, there were still some waves to play with outside the harbour. A course was set between Carthure Perch and Alfred Pier to try and give some shelter for the competitors. The result was some variable winds, waves on one side of the course and flat water on the other side, some tough decisions for the competitors and frequent position changes on the windward legs.

Ffinlo had to a good start in race one and finished in first place with Greg Kelly a close second, putting Ffinlo three points ahead at the start of Race 5. Then the positions were all to change. Ffinlo was over the start line and had to restart and Greg led the Sport fleet for the whole race. He had some stiff competition from newcomer Matthew Petts both were neck and neck at the last leeward mark. Greg finished in first place with Matthew a credible second and Ffinlo third. Greg now led the fleet and needed to keep Ffinlo behind him to win the series.

Greg had a poor start to Race 6 and battled up the first windward leg to regain his position at the front of the fleet. Meanwhile Harriet Quayle sailed an excellent race and finished in second place. Ffinlo finished third giving Greg Kelly the overall win for the series.

In the Pro fleet James sailed well and won Races 4 and 6, Hannah won Race 5 and Izzy sailed consistently finishing second in every race on Sunday. Overall James finished first, Hannah second and Izzy third.

It was great to see so many young people entering this regatta, on the whole there were some excellent performances and it is hoped that all the sailors will continue to race throughout the season.

Thanks to Race Officer Mick Kneale, Event Co-ordinator Cathie Ashurst, all the safety crews and 7th Wave for providing additional boats for competitors.

RS Tera Open Meeting update

13 sailors took part in the RS Tera Open Meeting hosted at the Isle of Man Yacht Club today.

The conditions were ideal for the first day of racing with a light SE breeze, providing excellent racing conditions, particularly for those who have not raced before. The Tera Sport fleet saw Ffinlo Wright winning races one and two and Greg Kelly winning race three. The three Tera Pro sailors all won one race each, leaving everything to play for tomorrow.

Forecast for tomorrow is giving SW force 4, so there may be a few waves to play with…….
