IOM Sports Awards

Great to see that sailing has two nominations for the IOM Sports Awards. Under 21 Sportsman – Greg Kelly, who is the RS Tera World Champion, RS Tera Inland Champion and RYA North West Regional Sailor of the Year. And in the Coach category…. erm…. well…. there’s me!

Christmas decorations are up

In time for Port Erin’s Xmas Tree festival big switch on and late night opening our shop is decorated. We opted not to put a tree on a bracket outside the shop as we didn’t think it would survive the wind down here. Sure enough when I arrived at the shop yesterday our flag and flagpole were clattering about on the pavement no longer connected to the bracket!

So… we’ve been a wee bit creative, our Christmas tree is indoors and needle free, it’s been fashioned from some driftwood and a fishing net found on the beach and is probably the most nautical ‘tree’ in Port Erin? Get yourselves down for a skeet!

Greg Kelly wins RYA Regional Sailor of the Year Award

Manx Youth Sailing Squad member and RS Tera World Champion, Greg Kelly has won the RYA Regional Sailor of the Year Award for the North West. Greg finished fourth at this year’s National championship, first at the Worlds and first at the Inlands.

This winter Greg is training with the RS Tera GBR National Squad in preparation for the Worlds at the Olympic sailing venue in Weymouth next summer. He has also teamed up with fellow Tera sailor George Catchpole to make the move into the RS Feva class on the UK circuit in 2013.

2012 Youth Sailing Weeks finished today :(

Well, it’s the end of this summer’s Youth Sailing Weeks 🙁 And despite all the rain and the absence of sun it has been a great 9 weeks. Huge thanks to Alex Sharpe, Tom Howitt, Luke Collins, Rowan Henthorn, Andrew George Wilson Paul, Izzy Sharpe, Katie Hill, Alison Hinds, Sarah Mercer, Connor Corkish-Sewell, Dave Kneale, Mum, Dad and everyone else that has helped pull trolleys up the beach, fix things, keep the tractor running, provided moral support and generally been there for us 🙂

Thanks also to all our wonderful sailors, who’ve worked hard, had fun and kept smiling and cheerful in the rain! I am sad it’s finished so soon, it’s been fun being on the water with you all.

Greg Kelly is RS Tera World Champion!

At the end of yesterday’s racing it looked like Greg Kelly could not be beaten on points going into the final race. Now we have confirmation, the final race at the RS Tera World Championship is complete and Manx Youth Sailing Squad member Greg Kelly will be awarded the RS Tera World Championship Trophy later today.

Greg’s older brother James won the event in 2010, also with one race to spare. This year for Greg it has been a tough battle, he has worked his way from 3rd after day 2 to 2nd on day 3 and outright first after day 4. Greg has won four races in this 10 race series as is the clear winner by 19 points! Speaking to me from Italy Greg said “It’s absolutely amazing and great to win”, I know how much this means to him after last season where he finished fourth at every major championship he attended.

The whole of the Manx Youth Sailing Squad have put in an outstanding performance with each sailor finishing in the top 10 overall. Ffinlo Wright will be disappointed to have missed out on the podium by one place, but at age 12 this youngster shows bright promise for the future. Amie Shute competing at her final Tera Worlds has finished 9th overall and 4th girl.

Competing at his first ever World Championship, 11 year old, Ben Batchelor’s goal was to finish in the top 20, I am delighted to say that Ben actually finished in 10th place overall in 40 strong RS Tera Sport fleet. Again the future looks bright for Manx sailing.

The Manx Youth Sailing Squad was formed by Jenni Kneale, Don Edwards, Phil Hardisty and Rob Cowell in 2008. The aim was to train a squad who would take part in two national events each year. The sailors have exceeded all expectations and can now boast training three World Champions!

Greg Kelly leads RS Tera Worlds

Greg Kelly is now lying in first place at the RS Tera World Championship. There is only one race to go and Greg now has an 8 point lead over his nearest rival. And as if that wasn’t enough Ffinlo Wright is in 3rd place overall!

All four members of the Manx Youth Sailing Squad are in the top 10 going into the final race tomorrow. Amie Shute is 8th place in the Pro fleet and Ben Batchelor is in 8th place in the Sport fleet. Go team IOM!!

At the first windward mark of the first race today Manx boats went round in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th 🙂
